December Announcements

First Announcement: I will be unable to attend this week's (December 12, 2009) meeting, but the other members are welcome to hold a meeting in my absence.

Second Announcement: There will be no meeting on December 26, 2009, as the center will be closed, and everybody will probably be stuck entertaining family or being entertained by family. Have a happy Boxing Day!

The first meeting of the new year will be January 9, 2010. See you there, 10:00 AM to Noon!

Manual Reminders

For one reason or another, I'm switching to manual reminders (as opposed to the auto reminders I was using). I'm sure the CLAW members would appreciate that.

Additionally, if any CLAW members would like to contribute to this blog, let me know. I'll ask again the next meeting (09/26/2009!).

Thanks.

America's Press (League City-based book printer)

In today's meeting, we discussed POD and vanity publishing houses. While discussing alternatives, I brought up the League City-based book printer, called America's Press.

Their website may be found here: http://www.americas-press.com/.

America's Press and C.L.A.W. do not have any existing business association.

Minutes From 05/23/2009

Sorry these are late. I was really, really, really busy.

Attendees: 2.

  1. Some people are unable to come to the 2nd Saturday meetings due to another group meeting at that time. It was suggested that the 2nd Saturday meeting be moved to the 1st Saturday. I considered this, but in the end decided against it, as then there would usually be back-to-back meetings (1st then 4th, except on months with a 5th)
  2. There was a mention of CLAW in the latest BAWL (http://www.bawl.org) newsletter
  3. Local Barnes & Noble (http://www.barnesandnoble.com) hosts a gamut of writers groups. These may be places to announce existence of CLAW
  4. Local Coffee Oasis (http://www.coffee-oasis.com) hosts poetry readings with featured poets. This too may be a good place to announce existence of CLAW
  5. There is an Alvin writer's group (name?) that hosts Spring and Fall writing workshops
  6. RhymeZone (http://www.rhymezone.com) is an excellent resource for poets
  7. We read Ann's piece (though I cannot remember the title at this time)\
  8. The Writer's Market (http://www.writersmarket.com) provides a listing of various markets, for those who need help finding them. I personally use Ralan (http://www.ralan.com), which appeals more to writers of speculative fiction

Action Items:
  • Jacob needs to put in face time with the other local writing/poetry groups. Too bad Jacob is really busy!

Minutes for 03/14/2009

Today was the first meeting of CLAW.

Only... nobody showed up.

So, Amber and I decided to cancel after 30 minutes and postpone the official FIRST meeting until 03/28/2009. At that time we'll discuss some aspects that Amber and I threw together.

We decided that the meetings will go as follows:
  1. Announcements/Introductions
  2. Critique of last time's pieces
  3. Activity/Talk
  4. Distribution of new stuff for next time
Additionally, we're throwing around the idea of e-mailing your works to each other electronically (if you draft it electronically, that is), and want to gage the desire of other individuals to do this (since otherwise, you'd have to print out your story and make enough copies for everyone you'd want critiquing your work).

So, please, come next time. Look at the calendar to see when it is, or check out the other posts (the important ones are tagged). Feel free to comment here or e-mail me (jacob.silvia@gmail.com) for more information.

Thanks!

First Meeting! (03/14/2009)

Come one, come all to the FIRST EVER C.L.A.W. MEETING!

When: March 14, 2009, 10:00-12:00 (Local Time)

Where: 2000 Nasa Parkway Nassau Bay, TX 77058 (TAACCL, http://www.taaccl.org)

What to Bring: Please bring a work of fiction (enough copies to go around) you would like the other members to critique. The plan is for the reviewers to take them home and read them and be ready to discuss them at the next meeting. We will also establish the group's needs. Be prepared to answer the following questions:

  1. How much time each meeting should take?
  2. What other activities (other than critiquing) would be of interest to the members? (This will help me make agendas for future meetings!)
  3. Would you like to make any sort of contribution to the administrative duties of the group?
Please contact me, Jacob (jacob.silvia@gmail.com), or leave a comment on the blog with any questions regarding the Clear Lake Area Writers meetings. Also, if you're planning on coming, please let me know so I can get an estimated headcount.

Thank you!
